Brian T. Watson's column in the Salem News:
Reflections on the demise of Salem Harbor Station

"The possibility that the Salem power plant may close, or be transformed into a natural gas plant or a mixed-use development of some type, offers us a chance to imagine and implement new, more sustainable ways of defining our relationship to nothing less than the future.

"That sentence may seem grander than a single city's problem. Salem Harbor Station, after all, is only one coal (and oil) plant among thousands in the world. The carbon dioxide and mercury that it spews into the atmosphere every year are but a miniscule fraction of total global pollution emitted annually...."

Solar Costs May Already Rival Coal, Spurring Boom in Panel Installations
from Bloomberg Businessweek, Apr 6, 2011

Solar panel installations may surge in the next two years as the cost of generating electricity from the sun rivals coal-fueled plants, industry executives and analysts said.

"Large photovoltaic projects will cost $1.45 a watt to build by 2020, half the current price, Bloomberg New Energy Finance estimated today. The London-based research company says solar is viable against fossil fuels on the electric grid in the most sunny regions such as the Middle East...."

Senator Scott Brown Votes Against Clean Air and Clean Water
from Cape Cod Today

Senate Defeats Multiple Attacks On Clean Air Act

By Drew Grande, Sierra Club

"Today, the U.S. Senate beat back multiple assaults on the Clean Air Act and attempts to handcuff the Environmental Protection Agency's ability to protect Americans from toxic pollution. Today Senator Scott Brown voted in support of the McConnell amendment, which would eliminate EPA's authority to regulate global warming pollution and weaken fuel economy standards. By supporting this bill Senator Scott Brown voted to ignore the science of global warming and even block reporting of greenhouse gas emissions.

"The most egregious of the attacks, offered by Senator McConnell, would permanently remove EPA authority over GHG emissions and weaken fuel economy standards, failed 50 to 50 - 60 votes were required for passage. Other bills which would needlessly delay, block or narrow EPA's commonsense public health protections received limited support...."

Scott Brown Sides with Polluters As Rest of Massachusetts Delegation Votes for Clean Air and Public Health

2011.04.07

Contact: Drew Grande, (617) 302-6257

Senator Scott Brown votes for polluters as Senator Kerry and MA House delegation vote for clean air and public health.

Boston, MA – Today the House of Representatives approved legislation that strips the Environmental Protection Agency’s ability to protect Americans’ public health against dangerous carbon pollution.  The bill, introduced by Rep. Fred Upton (R-MI), guts the Clean Air Act and threatens the health and well-being of American families.

The entire Massachusetts House delegation and other legislators recognized the importance of the EPA in protecting clean air and water for Massachusetts and stood up to polluters by voting against the bill. However, they were unable to garner enough votes to stop the bill. This vote comes only one day after Senator Scott Brown voted against clean air protections in the Senate.  This vote makes Senator Brown the only member of the Massachusetts delegation to vote against clean air and stand with polluters.

In response, Sierra Club Massachusetts Coal to Clean Energy Organizer Drew Grande released the following statement:

“Today, we applaud the Massachusetts House delegation and Senator Kerry for standing up to polluters and voting to maintain the EPA’s ability to protect against dangerous carbon pollution. Senator Kerry and members of the Massachusetts House delegation realize that we need to hold big polluters accountable for the damage they do to the public health of Americans.

“Though we are appalled by Senator Brown’s vote yesterday we are hopeful that he will stand with Massachusetts families when attacks on clean air and water come up again in the Senate.

“Since day one of the 112th Congress, House Republican leadership like Fred Upton have been tasked by their polluter campaign contributors with gutting essential health protections like the Clean Air Act and abolishing the Environmental Protection Agency’s ability to protect us from life-threatening pollution.

“This week, at the expense of millions of Americans who suffer from asthma, respiratory illness and other pollution-related disease, big polluters and their friends in Congress voted for higher profits for corporate polluters, dirtier air and water, more health problems, and more jobs shipped overseas, for the rest of us.

“The Sierra Club of Massachusetts applauds Senator John Kerry and our House delegation for standing up for the Clean Air Act, the EPA and the health of Massachusetts families.  We urge the Senator Brown to stand with the rest of Massachusetts for our health, our economy and our environment by rejecting this damaging and dangerous legislation.”

From Conservation Law Foundation:
Region’s Old Nuclear Plants Must Comply with Latest Safety Regs, or Shut Down

http://www.clf.org/blog/clean-energy-climate-change/clf-regions-old-nuclear-plants-must-comply-with-latest-safety-regs-or-shut-down/

In conjunction with a Massachusetts legislative hearing held today on nuclear power in New England, and with the Fukushima debacle still unfolding in Japan, CLF President John Kassel prevailed upon state and federal leaders to answer this wake-up call and take appropriate measures to avoid a similar crisis in New England or anywhere in the United States.

“Several of New England’s remaining nuclear power plants are on their last legs and continuing to prop them up at the taxpayers’ expense is not a viable long-term strategy,” Kassel said. “In the interest of public safety, these aging plants must comply with the latest safety standards within six months, or shut down. In addition, plant owners need to take immediate steps – at their expense – to better secure the radioactive waste now stored at these facilities. The notion that new nuclear power plants should be a cornerstone of our national energy policy is grossly irresponsible as long as there is no solution to the radioactive waste problem.”

Sierra Club Calls on President Obama to Stand Up to Big Polluters and House Leadership

WASHINGTON – Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune released the following statement in response to reports that the Obama Administration may accept amendments that would handcuff the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) from protecting public health as part of the ongoing Congressional budget negotiations.

“The Sierra Club strongly urges President Obama to stand up to polluters and just say ‘no’ to riders that will undermine executive authority, handcuff the EPA and put public health at risk.

“The President should keep his commitment to the American people and reject the strong-arm tactics of big polluters and their allies in Congress.  Entertaining a deal to dismantle essential clean air protections is a dangerous zero sum game for the public.”

The half-life of nuclear memory

"The nuclear catastrophe in Japan is forcing the world to once again focus on nuclear power as an energy source as it did after defining events in the '70s and '80s.

"Since the tragedy at the Three Mile Island in the late '70s, not a single nuclear plant has been built in the United States, and the Chernobyl disaster was a reminder just a few years later...."
