The Energy Efficiency Charge on Your National Grid Bill
from SAFE board member, Pat Gozemba
Look closely at your National Grid bill and note the Energy Efficiency charge. We all pay it but who gets the benefits?

We are trying to assure that low and medium income ratepayers get the benefits of the Energy Efficiency charge that we pay every month. Many middle and upper level income ratepayers have been able to take advantage of MASS SAVE programs but many people of limited income have trouble accessing the benefits.

A Different Kind of Ownership Society
by Marjorie Kelly, Shanna Ratner in YES! Magazine
Innovative strategies for cooperative local ownership make it possible for prosperity to be shared as well as sustainable.
posted Aug 03, 2010
Drive across southern Minnesota near the city of Luverne, and you’ll see clusters of wind turbines poking up through the cornfields. Climb into one of these sleek, gleaming, white towers, and you’ll find sophisticated computer controls monitoring dozens of factors every moment (wind speed, pressure on the blades, and so on). Yet the way the turbines are funded and owned is just as innovative as the technology that runs them.

(one of the sources for Salem's coal supply)
From Avi Chomsky:
"During our Witness for Peace delegation to Colombia in July, we met with representatives of the Sintracarbón union at the Cerrejón mine.... The men killed in the accident last week were all working for a subcontractor."...

"In Coal We Don't Trust"
from Think Progress, August 12, 2010
ENERGY
In Coal We Don't Trust
On April 5, an explosion of methane gas ripped through the Upper Big Branch Mine in West Virginia, eventually killing 29 of the 31 miners at the site. The tragedy was the worst mining disaster in decades and shed light on the unsafe working conditions in mines run by Massey Energy and other industry leaders. Yet more than four months later, federal officials say they still don't know the cause of the explosion, although they reject a theory "put forward by Massey, that a huge crack in the floor of the mine may have allowed an influx of the explosive gas methane."
